Rotorua Lakes Council: Creativity and Connection Drive Wellbeing Success

Rotorua Lakes Council, with around 550 dedicated staff, is proud to be a long-term Gold Accredited WorkWell workplace. Their story is one of creativity, innovation, and genuine care — all of which have been key ingredients in building a thriving workplace culture focused on wellbeing.

The Council’s WorkWell Committee is deeply passionate about supporting staff and creating a culture where positive wellbeing is part of everyday life. One of the Council’s core values is “Caring for our people,” and WorkWell aligns perfectly with this commitment.

Committee lead MK says the team is especially proud of the many initiatives implemented across all eight priority wellbeing areas — Mental Health, Healthy Eating, Physical Activity, Sun Safety, Alcohol and Other Drugs, Smokefree, Immunisation and Infection Control, and Breastfeeding.

Here are just a few examples of how the Council brings wellbeing to life for their staff:

  • Gumboot Throwing: A crowd favourite during Mental Health Awareness Week, this playful event raises funds and spirits alike. Staff enjoy friendly competition followed by a sausage sizzle and proceeds from this go to the Mental Health Foundation — a perfect recipe for fun, connection, and community.
  • Pink Shirt Day: Each year, staff rally together to take a stand against bullying. Homemade baking is brought in and sold, with all proceeds donated to the cause. The event not only raises funds but strengthens kindness and inclusivity across the organisation.
  • Winter Soup Days: During the colder months, Tuesdays and Thursdays become “Soup Days.” Staff cook up delicious soups, which are shared for a small donation. It’s a simple yet powerful way to bring people together and keep everyone warm and nourished.
  • Smoothie Bike: A summer favourite! Staff hop on the bike, add their ingredients, and pedal to power the blender. The faster you ride, the quicker your smoothie is ready! It’s a fun and interactive way to combine physical activity and healthy eating — and the bike travels to different sites so everyone can join in.

WorkWell has become truly embedded in the culture at Rotorua Lakes Council. The initiatives have not only supported healthier habits but have also strengthened relationships and fostered a sense of belonging. Staff say they feel valued, appreciated, and proud to be part of a workplace that genuinely cares for their wellbeing.
