Port of Tauranga riding the wave of their WorkWell success

Port of Tauranga has recently gained Gold accreditation for their WorkWell program ShipShape.

We spoke with Ali Young and Rachael Nunn, two key members of their working group to share their WorkWell journey. Here’s what they told us.

“WorkWell has been instrumental in uniting staff and creating a culture of inclusiveness and working well together to achieve positive outcomes for staff to improve health and wellbeing. Management have fully supported the WorkWell programme as it has credibility as a Public Health accreditation standard and brings with it a structured framework to guide our workplace through the accreditation process.

“Our priority wellbeing iniatitives have been chosen with much thought in what most staff would participate in. This has been a major part of our success. Some of these ideas include creating a recipe book where staff have given input, and Step-tember is another big initiative to promote physical activity in a friendly competitive environment. Because WorkWell is staff-led the programme is purposeful in responding to the needs to staff wellbeing for everyone to benefit from.

“The biggest challenge for us is enabling shift workers to participate and be included, Ali said. Covid also played a part in hindering progress as many staff were working from home. To overcome this we used effective communication to connect our team through staff newsletters, intranet, and emails so everyone can be involved.”

WorkWell has been a great way to leverage closer connection with senior management and to engage and commit to the wellbeing of all staff. Relationships have strengthened through ShipShape and two-way communication at all levels. Success has seen a range of initiatives across all the priority wellbeing areas, and ensuring everyone feels valued. Doing the right thing for their people is evident in the shift in culture of the organisation and breaking down barriers to interact and collaborate.

Way to go Port of Tauranga - creating a workplace where wellbeing is at the centre of all you do!
