ConneXu Strikes Gold in Workplace Wellbeing

ConneXu 2020 Trust, a Waikato-based disability support organisation with nearly 300 staff, has a long history of supporting people with intellectual, physical, cognitive, sensory, and neurological disabilities. Their commitment to “Enabling Good Lives” is matched by an equally strong focus on supporting the wellbeing of their own kaimahi.

This year marks a significant milestone for ConneXu, as they have recently achieved WorkWell Gold Standard of Accreditation— a reflection of their sustained effort, strong leadership commitment, and the genuine engagement of their workforce in wellbeing initiatives.

ConneXu joined WorkWell to strengthen their wellbeing culture and create a workplace where staff feel supported, connected, and able to thrive. They set out to build sustainable initiatives that reflect their values and meet the needs of a diverse and regionally spread workforce.

Over the past year, ConneXu has implemented a wide range of practical wellbeing activities. Popular initiatives include team bootcamps and yearround walking groups, which have boosted physical activity and strengthened social connection. Soup Mondays and healthier catering options have normalised nutritious eating across the organisation, making wellbeing both accessible and enjoyable.

Their smokefree efforts include ongoing education and personalised cessation support, helping staff engage confidently in conversations about reducing. Mental health has also been a priority, with the introduction of the Clearhead Employment Assistance Program (EAP) platform and updated performance tools designed to improve communication and psychological safety within teams.

Infection control initiatives, including flu vaccinations delivered through new pharmacy partnerships, have been well received across regions and have helped protect staff throughout the year.

While challenges such as varied schedules and regional coordination required adaptability, ConneXu responded with flexible, ondemand resources and wellbeing champions who supported communication and engagement.

One of the most rewarding outcomes has been the growing participation and enthusiasm from staff. Wellbeing is now an ongoing, embedded conversation rather than a oneoff campaign, a shift that contributed directly to them achieving Gold Accreditation.

Looking ahead, ConneXu plans to continue strengthening existing initiatives while expanding into new focus areas such as sun safety, alcohol and drug harm reduction, and enhanced mental health support.
