Te Wiki o Te Reo Māori / Māori Language Week

Te Wiki o Te Reo Māori is an annual celebration for all New Zealanders to show their support for the Māori language, an official language of New Zealand.

Below are a few ideas to help you acknowledge te reo Māori in your mahi for the week of 14th – 20th September. You could choose to do these all year round. Give it a go!

1.       Facilitate te reo Māori learning sessions led by a fluent Māori speaker. Click the link to find the many options available that are free.

2.       Add te reo Māori to the signage around the workplace. The official Te Reo Māori website has many resources to get you started with signage.

3.       Encourage the use of phrases in general communications. You could swap Hello’ for ‘Tēnā koe’ or ‘Kind regards’ for ‘Ngā mihi’.

4.       Try a te reo Māori quiz or game. Check out Kahoot for pre-made Māori quizzes.

5.       Mix up the office or workshop soundtrack for something like Waiata Anthems. Incidental exposure of te reo can make a significant difference to language proficiency.

6.       Finish the week with shared healthy kai celebration and have some fun putting all the te reo learnings together.

This is a wonderful way to connect and create awareness to learn te reo Māori, eat healthy and celebrate cultural diversity in the workplace. If you want to find out more about culture and inclusion, and healthy eating in the workplace checkout the following WorkWell links –
