Be SunSmart This Summer — Keep Your Team Protected at Work

Summer in Aotearoa brings long days, warm weather, and plenty of sunshine — but it also brings stronger UV rays. Whether your team works outdoors or commutes between sites, being SunSmart is essential for health, safety, and wellbeing.

Why Sun Protection Matters

New Zealand experiences some of the highest UV levels in the world, especially from September to April. Even on cloudy or cooler days, UV radiation can cause lasting skin and eye damage. Prolonged exposure increases the risk of skin cancer, the most common cancer in New Zealand — yet it’s also one of the most preventable.

Workplaces Have a Role to Play

Every employer has a duty to provide a safe working environment. That includes protecting workers from UV exposure. Practical steps can make a big difference in keeping teams safe and comfortable this summer.

SunSmart Steps for Work

Encourage your team to Slip, Slop, Slap and Wrap — and integrate these actions into daily routines:

  • Slip on long-sleeved, lightweight clothing and a wide-brimmed hat.
  • Slop on SPF 30+ broad-spectrum sunscreen — reapply every two hours.
  • Slap on a hat that shades the face, ears, and neck.
  • Wrap on close-fitting sunglasses for UV eye protection.
  • Seek shade whenever possible — set up temporary shelters or rotate tasks to reduce time in direct sun.
  • Schedule smarter — plan outdoor work for earlier or later in the day when UV levels are lower (before 10 a.m. or after 4 p.m.).

Stay Informed

Check the NIWA UV Index or SunSmart UVNZ app daily to know when UV levels are highest. If the index is 3 or above, protection is essential.

A SunSmart Culture Starts With You

Lead by example — apply sunscreen, wear protective gear, and talk openly about sun safety at toolbox meetings. Small, consistent actions help build a culture where everyone looks out for one another.

Let’s make this a safe, healthy, and SunSmart summer — at work and beyond!
